What happens when dementia, depressed dipsomania and downright dottiness decide to uproot from the UK and move to France together.
Is That Billinge Lump?
It seemed like a good idea at the time. When British healthcare failed her ageing mother, eccentric writer Tottie decided to uproot her dysfunctional family and try again in France.
Mother Was It Worth It?
Tottie and her eccentric family moved to France in search of a better life for her nearly nonogenarian mother who suffered from dementia. As her full-time carer, Tottie listened to daily recitations of her favourite saying: ‘Mother, mother, it’s a bugger, sell the pig and buy me out.”
Catch up now with Tottie in the AM years – After Mother – as she starts her new life in the rural Livradois-Forez region of the Auvergne, living in Tottie’s Grottage. Meet the local inhabitants, from exotic birds to colourful characters like the Bin Pickers, Library Lady and the Bowing Farmer. All are described with Tottie’s familiar gently ironic humour. Discover the procedure behind the Frogification of Tottie, and if her bid for French nationality is successful.
‘Mother Was It Worth It?’ is the concluding part of the Sell the Pig series, which began with ‘Sell the Pig’ and ‘Is That Billinge Lump?’
Take Three Birds
On a mountaintop in Italy, English writer Jill comes up with an idea – to meet up in the flesh with two other writers she encountered on the internet and has shared many online laughs with. One slight problem is that Janet lives in England and has never flown. Another is that Tottie lives in France and, like a good wine, doesn’t travel.
So intrepid Janet boards her first ever flight to meet Jill in Italy and together they embark on a crazy road trip in a twenty-year-old Fiat Punto, to disturb the peace of Tottie’s little ‘grottage’ in France’s Auvergne.
When two sixty-somethings and a forty-something meet up, there’s lots of laughter and plenty of chatter. But will it turn out to be a lasting friendship or will the Three Birds part company vowing never to meet again?
